Every child of God should desire to enjoy communication with God always. You need to learn how to hear from God  if you want an effective communication with him. It is good to pray as well as to hear from God.  Hearing from God, from my experience, is not easy for many believers. This is principally so because they were not taught how to; Jesus said in John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (KJV) The Lord expects us to recognise his voice and obey it. It could be really frustrating if we fail to hear him, understand what he wants us to do and then do it. Mary told his disciples ““Do whatever he tells you” John 2:5. It is acting on the word of God that produces miracle.

Samuel learnt to recognise the voice of God; the scripture says “One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.  The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am. ” And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.  Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel! ” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Sam. 3:2-11 (NIV). It is important that we take time to understand how God speaks to us.

One way that God speaks to us is through the Bible. This is the foundation of every other way God speaks to us. Every word God says in any other way must conform to biblical standards. God is not the author of confusion. He does not contradict himself. Any revelation, prophesy, vision or dreams must be judged with what God had revealed in the Bible.

If we want to hear God and understand his leading we must study the Bible. Read it, Study it and meditate on it. This is not strange; in every field of human endeavour, those who want to excel in anything must devote their time to learn it. You can never be good at anything except you learn “how to do” it and exercise yourself in it. Read and memorise portions of the Bible. Learn to review the words you read (that is Christian meditation). “You turn it over and over in your mind” with the intention to understand the meaning of the word and how you can apply it in your life.

Technology has made this easier and enjoyable. You can never out-grow this aspect of Christian life, no matter how long you have been a Christian.
